Who needs a DQ file?

  • All CDL drivers must have a DQ file.

  • Non-CDL drivers operating vehicles that meet the definition of a CMV also require a DQ file. This includes vehicles:

    • weighing over 10,000 lbs.

    • transporting 9-15 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.

    • transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding.

  • Each employer must maintain a DQ file for multiple employer drivers, unless a shared employment arrangement is documented, according to FMCSA guidelines.

  • New hires and re-hired drivers require a new or updated DQ file.
