Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Must have a California driver’s license to get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).
Ages 18-20: May drive for a commercial company within California as long as the load does not originate from outside of the state.
Age 21+: Must be at least 21 years old to transport interstate commerce, hazardous materials, or wastes.

The following checklist is provided to assist motor carriers whose California (CA) terminals are subject to inspection by the Department of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) pursuant to Section 34501 or 34501.12 of the California Vehicle Code (CVC). Any motor carrier, as defined in Section 408 CVC, can improve its ability to pass such inspections by closely examining its own operations using the following checklist.

49 CFR 391 explains the minimum requirements for commercial motor vehicle drivers. Motor carriers are required to maintain a qualification file for each of their drivers. The following checklist will help you ensure that each driver qualification file is complete.

Annual Driver's Certificate of Violations: A certification signed by the driver listing their traffic violations over the past 12 months.
Annual Driving Record Review: A documented review of the driver's driving record and a note confirming the review was completed.
Updated Driver's License: Ensure the license copy remains current.
Updated Medical Examiner's Certificate: Ensure the medical certificate is current.
Updated MVR: MVRs should be obtained annually.
FMCSA Clearinghouse Query: An annual limited query must be performed.
